Adolph Joseph “Sonny” Gardella, of Gulfport, Florida passed away peacefully on February 14, 2022 at age 81. Loving father of Joseph (Leta) Gardella, Jennifer (Rich) Seltzer and the late Philip (Laura) Gardella; dear grandfather of Jessica, Paige, Nicholas, Joseph, Allison and Philip; brother to William (Barbara) Gardella; former husband of the late Madeline “Maddy” Gardella
Sonny was born and raised in Yonkers, New York where he graduated Sacred Heart High School in 1958. After graduation, Sonny enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served for many years. In 1960, Sonny began his career in the sugar industry at Refined Sugars as a laborer before moving into sales just a few years later. Sonny continued his lifelong career in the sweetener industry, eventually co-founding Sweetener Supply Corporation in 1990 with his dear friend Thomas F. Speck.
Sonny’s integrity, kindness and unparalleled understanding of the sweetener industry made him a legend among his many trade friends; his striking blue eyes, bright smile and sharp attire were loved and a legend by all who knew him. Outside of his thriving career, Sonny was an avid runner and golfer until his diagnosis with MS in the late 90’s. Sonny put up a courageous battle against MS for many years; he never let his condition take away from his favorite activity, spending time with beloved children and grandchildren.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph “Sonny” & Julia Gardella; his son, Philip J. Gardella; the mother of his children, Madeline “Maddy” Gardella.
