John Charles (Bumpy) McCaffrey, beloved husband of the late Elaine Robertson (nee Hatch) McCaffrey, brother to the late Thomas Jude (TJ) McCaffrey (Madelyn), sister to the late Kate McCaffrey, loving uncle of Kathleen Sroka and great uncle to Roberta, Michael and Holly Sroka, cousin to John Butler (Joanne) as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a graduate of Mendel Catholic High School, class of 1963 and attended Wilson Junior College, South Dakota State University, and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He served in the US Army Reserve and was a loyal member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 399 working at the Midwest Stock Exchange and as a Chief Engineer with the City of Chicago until his retirement in 2004. A gentle giant of a man, he participated in Iron Man and Appalachian Trail Triathlons and traveled the world dispensing kindness, wisdom and friendship to all he met.
